Seeds – “They feed us, clothe us, and provide the raw materials for our everyday lives. In a very real sense, they are life itself.”
– Seed, the movie.
A couple of years ago I went to see “Seed, the untold story”, a documentary movie which highlights the huge importance of maintaining our seed diversity and heritage. The cinematography is stunning but more than that, I learnt a great deal about how different events and actions we take impact on our seed stores and ultimately our food and plant diversity. We are losing the majority of our seed diversity which is an awful and sad thing.
We can start taking action to combat this in a number of ways…
- Grow your own GMO free (Genetically Modified Organism) and open pollinated seeds.
- Start seed saving! Let your herbs and vegetables go to seed, check out their different forms in this state, be amazed by the different beauty that it brings and also benefit from free plants next season!
- Seed swap with friends and neighbours.
- Support local farmers who grow crops ethically and sustainably – try a heritage variety of heirloom tomatoes.
Go forth and spread the seed!
